Most of the series have the purpose of “making the idea of the sentence and its essential components as simple and clear as possible for students who will use the information in their writing” (p. 268; italics added). The idea that grammar makes writing possible is an old one and appears to be responsible for what has been called a building block theory of writing development.

Bernard McCabe (1971) describes this theory as based on the assumption that: Compositions can be best described [as resulting]

from combining elements that are hierarchical in character. Letters are linked together in strings to produce words; words, to produce sentences; sentences, to produce paragraphs; and paragraphs, to produce longer compositions.

Acting on the basis of this conception, a teacher may read a set of papers and notice that some papers contain run-on sentences or sentence fragments. Despite the fact that the same papers contain many more well-formed sentences, the teacher may accept the few errors as evidence that the students “cannot write sentences.” All work on superordinate structures in the hierarchy is then delayed while the class is taught a number of lessons dealing with “sentence sense.” (See Page)
